About

Origin

A legacy reimagined
Babalab took shape in 2011, born from the desire to reinterpret Studio Ciusa, the practice founded by my father Michele A. Ciusa, Architect and which whom intellect was dedicated to cultural diverity and traditions he was Director of the I.S.R.E. Museum.

What began as continuity soon became a transformation; a way to honor a family legacy while opening new ground for design languages experimentation.
From the beginning, Babalab was envisioned as a place where artistic culture could meet contemporary design thinking, and where research into material, storytelling, and visual experimentation could evolve freely.
It became a laboratory where innovation met materials reimagined into new forms.
Rooted in craft, the design research continuously fueled by a fascination with interaction design and sensoriality.

Babalab reflects this journey: a continual exploration of craftsmanship, tactile richness, and the pleasure of aesthetic experience.

A multidisciplinary studio

As Babalab evolved, in the 2016 the studio pivot and expanded through residential projects and collaborations with design‑and‑build companies in Italy and abroad, adopting an increasingly integrated approach to interiors, architecture, and brand experience.
These partnerships strengthened the ability to deliver complex projects across different markets and design disciplines, from interior design to brand strategy.
As a creative laboratory Babalab grew into a space for experimentation across all fields of design:
– Graphic,  startegic branding and exhibition
– Furniture prototypes and Interaction Design research
– Interior and architectural design

A new phase

In 2023, Babalab has rebranded and is entering a new chapter—one that honours its cultural roots while expanding its ambitions within the UK market.

Our team of skilled interior designers, architects, and graphic artists has worked with award‑winning firms such as Studio Moren and SMC, leading design projects across the EMEA region for well‑known brands. Their expertise in operations, brand standards, hospitality, and F&B will support our clients in optimising workflows, enhancing spatial organisation, and elevating the overall experience.

Our next milestones include collaborating on small‑ to medium‑scale hotel and hospitality developments, strengthening our international presence, and expanding the studio’s role as a bridge between design, culture, and craftsmanship.

Guided by the same founding principles—now refined through experience—Babalab moves forward with the ambition to shape spaces and narratives that connect people to place, build memory, and create meaning.
